About Us

Born and raised in Northern England, Andrew and Mary Walker met in college, and followed careers in engineering and teaching respectively. Their work took them to four continents in the 1980s, before a permanent move “across the pond” to the USA in 1991.

They raised their family in Pittsburgh, PA, where Andrew ran a large geotechnical engineering company and Mary worked in early childhood education. They became U.S. citizens in 2003. After retirement in 2012 they moved south to escape the chilly winters and found that Salisbury NC had the small town feel with the sense of community they were looking for, plus milder winter temperatures. In 2013 they purchased the Stokes Snider home on N. Fulton St. which was built in 1919 in the Colonial Revival style by Dr. J. Edgar Stokes, a prominent physician and surgeon, and home for nearly 60 years to the beloved Snider family.

After an intense 6 month renovation project and with a sympathetic understanding of its history and the covenants in place on this historic property, Andrew and Mary opened the doors of “Across the Pond Bed and Breakfast” for the first time to guests in January 2014. While the home still has echoes from the 20^th century when high ceilings and gleaming hardwood floors were the norm, the home has a contemporary feel with the luxury of 21^st century accommodations. The three updated guest rooms are all en suite with sitting areas, complimentary WiFi, flat screen TV’s and crisp bed linens.

A special welcome awaits you in the suite, which has a marble bathroom, a separate bedroom and cozy sitting room. The lovely common areas include the elegant lounge with its sparkling chandeliers and gas log fire, the dining room with a retro vibe; the nook with its inviting chaise lounge, the stately library, an expansive upstairs hallway, and the beautiful sunroom with an original terrazzo floor where “full English” breakfasts will be served. All showcase the owners’ eclectic book and art collection.

The home holds many secrets which the hosts will be more than willing to share — from the original decorator’s inscriptions from 1919 uncovered during the renovation, to three amazing original cedar closets in the huge attic, to something in the basement that will have you shaking your head!
