Mary and Andrew, owners of Across the Pond B & B

About Us

Born and raised in Northern England, Andrew and Mary Walker met in college, and followed careers in engineering and teaching respectively. Their work took them to four continents in the 1980s, before a permanent move “across the pond” to the USA in 1991.

They raised their family in Pittsburgh, PA, where Andrew ran a large geotechnical engineering company and Mary worked in early childhood education. They became U.S. citizens in 2003. After retirement in 2012, they set out to find a small town with a strong sense of community to settle in, and where they would not be required to shovel snow from their driveway! They knew they wanted to live in North Carolina after many summertime visits to this beautiful Southern state.

House History

The Colonial Revival-Style frame house was built in 1919 for Dr. Ernest Stokes. Dr. Stokes was the resident surgeon at Salisbury’s first hospital, the Whitehead-Stokes Sanatorium. The house was later home to the prominent Snider family for 59 years. It is one of Salisbury’s finest houses and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The house features unique craftsmanship — from the leaded glass to the cedar closets to the quarter-sawn oak floors.

Located within five blocks of Main Street, the house is a short stroll to numerous churches, antique stores, theatres, restaurants, bars, and homes of historic significance. These homes attract visitors from far and wide, especially for the annual homes tour, OctoberTour, organized by the Historic Salisbury Foundation.
