House History
You’ll find time to relax & reflect at Across the Pond Bed & Breakfast, centrally located in Historic Salisbury in the Piedmont of North Carolina, less than an hours drive from some of the state’s major cities. The Colonial Revival Stokes-Snider House is the best of the South in the State’s oldest inland town.
The house was built in 1919 for Dr. Ernest Stokes. Dr. Stokes was the resident surgeon at Salisbury’s first hospital, the Whitehead-Stokes Sanatorium. The house was later home to the prominent Snider family for 59 years. It is one of Salisbury’s finest houses and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The house features unique craftsmanship — from the leaded glass to the cedar closets to the quarter-sawn oak floors.
Located within five blocks of Main Street, the house is a short stroll to numerous churches, antique stores, theatres, restaurants, bars, and homes of historic significance. These homes attract visitors from far and wide, especially for the annual homes tour, OctoberTour, organized by the Historic Salisbury Foundation.
History runs deep through Salisbury, from the War of Independence to the Civil War. Much of that history has been preserved. Visit the North Carolina Transportation Museum, a five-minute drive, or take in a show at Lee Street Theatre, a 10-minute walk. Explore the African-American Heritage Trail, two blocks away.
